Creating a Spock sculpt...

By now many of you have seen the Wrath of Khan Spock headsculpt from the previous post. I thought it might be interesting to show you how this (over several weeks) was turned from a square block of hard wax, into the completed head you saw.

Sculpting with wax is very different to using the usual softer clays. Wax is hard (you can bang it on a desk without damaging it) so you have to sculpt it with metal sculpting tools when you need to reshape or remove material, and heat it up so you can drip new wax onto the head wherever you need to add material.

This was my first time using wax, and I can't wait to finish the next one. The following pic shows it from the very beginning to about 80% complete.

(as usual click for larger pics)

...and now the completed head.
